Reflexology in Pregnancy

Reflexology is an important part of the Gentle Birth Method and is one of the most powerful non-invasive healing treatments available. Regular treatments during pregnancy help to prepare the mother mentally and physically for labour and birth. Reflexology is safe to use in pregnancy and can help relieve a variety of symptoms.
It is particularly effective to:

• Alleviate anxiety
• Reduce fluid retention and swelling
• Aid digestion and other organ functions
• Relieve discomfort and back ache
• Improve the oxygen supply to the placenta and baby
• Strengthen the immune system
• Reduce stress induced hypertension
• Improve sleep
• Encourage onset of labour

Postnatal care is often a neglected area. The physicality of having a baby is not spread over nine months, but twelve. For three months after the birth (the fourth trimester) your body is recovering from the effects of the pregnancy. In addition to the known benefits of reflexology, postnatal treatments can:

• Increase energy levels and restore vitality
• Boost kidney function and assist elimination of body fluids
• Strengthen the immune system
• Provide much needed care and attention for yourself

The History of Reflexology is an ancient healing art first practised by the early Indian, Chinese and Egyptian peoples. It is based on the principle that there are reflex points on the hands and feet that relate to all parts of the body. Using specific thumb and finger techniques to apply gentle pressure to these reflex points enables the body to:

• Relieve stress and tension
• Improve circulation
• Eliminate toxins
• Enhance wellbeing
